Excerpts from Script Review 2 on The Black List
Strengths:
There are several strong areas in AMERICAN ODYSSEY. While the concept alone isn't especially original or thought provoking, the story is well executed and certainly compelling. Most of the characters are solid. Blue makes for a strong female lead, alternating between maternal and vulnerable. Her interactions with Hunter remind the reader of her youth and innocence but her natural inclination to care for Billy makes her seem wise beyond her years. Hunter himself is likable and the kind of boy-next-door that a girl could fall for, so the relationship the develops between him and Blue - as well as the way they assume the parental roles in the group - feels natural and effortless. Finally, the setting and scenery is lush and wonderful. The imagery leaps off the page and promises beautiful visuals to juxtapose the group dynamic crumbling.
Prospects:
While there has been a massive influx of coming-of-age dramas in the past few years, the road trip setting does help set this one apart which certainly helps its chances...There may be a buyer somewhere who really connects to the material.
